Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight.
Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do! What's up? Truth be told, I'm a little afraid to go down there at this point as I am sure the vegetation has been growing vigorously without my being there to beat it into submission.
Anyhoo, I need to plan a work trip this week to tidy up the road and the ranges and get the place presentable for members of the Moron Gun Club making a return visit, and also the Dream Date with Weasel winner, Julie S. With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we? This is a gun I inherited from my father, a Smith and Wesson Model purchased in We were able to take it shooting a couple of times and I very fondly recall those trips.
My dad wasn't a big shooter, and this handgun was a "spite" purchase in response to a politician who annoyed him by, among other things, pushing gun control back in the day. Gotta love my Dad! Spite purchases can be some of the best and most rewarding, don't you think? Please tell us about your dad and any shooting you might have done together.
Did he teach you how to shoot? More importantly, are you teaching your son or daughter how to shoot? I always stop at one of the small town gas stations along the way, and took this picture in April of What are you doing, if anything, to mitigate the cost?
Are you making fewer range trips and shooting less once you get there? Let us know in the comments if you have figured out how to save some money. A: What the hell do you think? I received the card signed by everyone who was at the NoVa MoMe and it really made my day.
Thanks to everyone who made the NoVa MoMe and took the time to sign the card. Regards, -Blake Thank You Blake! I recently acquired a. Its stamped with Israeli Army markings due the Israelis ordering them in for use by their armed forces.
That is the only. My dad was a military arms collector and had an extensive collection of KAR98s, and it's from his collection that I acquired the one I own. It was only after independence was won, , that they ordered the rifle for the fledgling IDF in the new. I hope to get out from Utah to shoot at a meet with lurkers like myself. Very nice Utah Lurker, and welcome! Thanks for the information and sending this in, and hope to see you at a MoMe!
Here are some pictures of my Spanish rifles which include the FR Last Week there were some questions on the FR-7 and the FR-8 so I figured I would send a few pictures of my FR-8 so folks would know what one looks like and what to look for if they see one out in the wild. From the pictures the FR-8 was used to get the Spanish troops familiar with the new but still yet to be issued Cetme roller lock, delay blowback semi-auto rifle. The front and rear sights as well as the flash hider and grenade ability of the FR-8 are what one would find on a Cetme B.
The FR-8 also uses the same bayonet as the Cetme B and also the sling setup. A nice shooter, it does pack a wallop on recoil and the iron Cetme sights do take some getting used to but work reasonably well. My FR-8 was made in and is still in excellent condition and fun to shoot!
Very nice, Hairyback Guy!! Thank you for sending these in! The rifle has a fixed peep sight set at yards. It has a second peep for extended ranges on a slide. The front sight is adjustable for windage but wound need an armorer or expert to adjust them. Rifle is as I bought it some 35years ago. Shot my re-loads. Remarkable for a rifle that could be pushing years old. I'll have to see when this one was assembled.
In the second target you can see I was wearing out. Wasn't the rifle's fault. Missed the whole dang target twice. I'll have to get someone to help me next time. Traipsing up and down the range in this heat and humidity is more that I can handle at this point. Nicely done Javems and thank you! Isn't it fun shooting these old rifles and wondering where they have served? How about a picture of the rifle?
Who needs an a-salt rifle for hunting? Why do you need a gun that holds more than 10 grains of salt?!?! Did you know you can buy these on the internet?! I recently had the pleasure of doing some fly hunting with a group of my fellow dangerously unstable right-wingers. Believe it or not, the Bug-A-Salt rifle really works, and comes with a wide range of accessories to customize your setup; including laser sights and custom ammunition and even a Bug Cam to record the hunt!
With standard ammunition, ballistic performance was excellent in crosswinds up to 3 mph, and targets as far away as 1 yard were successfully engaged. This week he tackles penetrating oil. What the heck? One of my favorites, Aerokroil, came in last! I still think it's a great product, but maybe not the best for loosening rusty bolts. And although it apparantly doesn't work as well as some of the others, it makes up for it by costing more!
This is a great topic as far as saving money, because there are a seemingly endless list of "must have" items advertised to first time gun owners. Timmy is wise. Future expansion plans are in the works for the site Weasel Gun Thread. If you have a question you would like to ask Gun Thread Staff offline, just send us a note and we'll do our best to answer.
If you care to share the story of your favorite firearm, send a picture with your nic and tell us what you sadly lost in the tragic canoe accident. If you would like to remain completely anonymous, just say so. Lurkers are always welcome! That's it for this week - have you been to the range? Posted by: Former Gun Owner A. I have left expensive veal shanks Osso Bucco braising for Forgot to take them out of the oven before I went to work, and 12 hours later came home to some sad little desiccated shanks that had just the tiniest bit of dry but barely edible meat on them.
But damn it! I ate what I could salvage! And exploding eggplants are always fun! Pro Tip: poke some holes in them before you roast them. Anybody ever misread your own recipe and add 50 grams of Cayenne instead of five grams? But I fixed by correcting the weights of all the other ingredients and ended up with enough dry rub to make about 8, racks of ribs. Which is not the worst thing in the world! Anyway, fess up. Tell the class your worst screw-ups.
Domino's Pizza has done this for years, and innumerable take-out joints do pretty much the same thing. But it's got a cool and hip name, so it must be better! There are many forms of ghost kitchens, but the barebone structure is that it is a meal preparation facility -- and that's it. All a ghost kitchen does is receive the order and cook the food. If the kitchen does not have its own delivery service, it relies on third party delivery service apps like UberEats or Grubhub to transport the food to the customer.
Ghost kitchens are not designed to be seen or to dine in, and multiple restaurants can rent the same ghost kitchen, hence saving rent space money and additional labor costs. Obviously the shift to take-out and delivery because of the Covid lockdowns drove the increase in this sort of operation, but I wonder how demand will survive the current recession and the significant inflation that is baked in the cake for the next few years?
My guess is that the first thing to get tossed out the window is take-out and delivery meals. As "RS" says: The oysters are curated. You learn the name of your server and the name of your "shucker. I followed those up with Burgundy scallops and a cauliflower gratin, both of which were roasted in a wood-fired oven. Second photo, cauliflower in the background playing second fiddle to the scallops which were the Platonic ideal of well-prepared shellfish.
Oh, yeah. There was also a big-ass chocolate cake. Curated oysters sounds like lunacy, but tasty, tasty lunacy! And a good scallop is a wonder. I like goat cheese, I love bacon, honey is always a good thing, and thyme is my third favorite besides salt and pepper Whipped goat cheese dip with bacon, thyme and honey And I find the writer immensely appealing. She's an Aussie who moved to Texas! Sure, the first time you make it you probably should check a few recipes for time and temperature, but after that?
She recommends using some sort of frou-frou non-stick spray on the baking dish. Just make some bacon, use the drippings to grease the dish, and put the bacon in the casserole! See how easy cooking is! So don't be too offended if I don't respond to your questions or comments or abuse.
But I will take lots of pictures and eat enough for everyone! And don't think that you are off the hook with maple syrup and French Toast: I'm watching you And I am watching you perverts who shake Manhattans and keeping a list for the Burning Times. Posted by: N. Posted by: bonhomme at June 19, PM i0wNm. Posted by: April - dash my lace wigs! Shoe laces are an invention of the devil, or at least one of his imps.
First of all, they break at the most inopportune moments, usually when you are in a rush, and always when you don't have an extra pair. Second of all, the technology of shoelaces has changed not a whit in hundreds of years. Why can't some intrepid marine rope maker produce chafe-resistant shoelaces using the same amazing technology and materials that modern man uses on his boats?
Obviously this is monopolistic behavior on the part of Big Lace. They probably have teams of hit-men spread out across the world, eliminating intrepid upstarts who want to break the stranglehold they have on the world shoelace market. And don't get me started on umbrellas! Posted by: bill in arkansas, not gonna comply with nuttin, waiting for the knock on the door at June 19, PM lz5hY.
It's a lot, and it's far too much. With that out of the way, let's look at it comparatively over time and try to dig deeper. The price of gas has consequences on everyday life for all of us. Diesel does, too, of course, and in even bigger ways given its place in our transportation system, but this post is about gasoline We use gas to go shopping, to mow the lawn, to go to work, to head out on the town.
When the price of gas skyrockets like it has, it implies tremendous consequences on quality of life. To determine how much gas costs today, we can use dollars like they do at the gas pump but we can also use other measures - namely time. In other words, how much do you have to work to buy that gallon of gas? This approach also varies by locale. The price of gas varies, as do wages. Location For the time periods, let's use a peak , a lower average , a peak and a peak.
So how does this look for five locations? Let's see. Here are two tables, one with raw data and one with the price of gasoline in terms of income and inflation. There will be a lengthy text block at the end of the post with sources and other notes. Table 1 Dollar cost information for each region in each year, where data are available. The comparative story is slightly less bad than the calculations imply, as there was a pay rise in - we just don't know how much.
Table 2 The price of gas in terms of hours worked at minimum and median wages and based on inflation since Click to enlarge was a long time ago and the time since then makes remembering the reality more difficult, if you were even fully aware of and hurt by the high gas prices. In terms of median wages, however, not a single state sampled is seeing cheaper gas.
Only one state - Texas - has seen the gas price in terms of the median wage hold steady. Taxes, of course, have not been stable and inflation is a fairly poor measure for volatile commodities. So by the numbers, we're worse off in gas price terms than we were in except for minimum-wage earners in New York and Colorado. We are also worse off than we were in , with the same exceptions. The tremendous progress in oil production, refining, distribution and more - progress that led to lower prices through the 90s and after and significantly from - has evaporated.
A 40 year setback. And what does this mean for working people who have to buy gas? Assuming a hypothetical national average person, the minimum wage worker must work The same hypothetical worker at the median wage must work 9 minutes. To fill a 12 gallon gas tank, the minimum wage worker must work for 8. To fill that same gas tank, the median wage worker must work for 1. If our national average person consumes 30 gallons of fuel per month on commuting, shopping, school runs, etc.
If he earns the median, he will need to work 4. Again, taxes come out first so the effective numbers are quite a bit higher. With the exceptions noted above, this is worse than This is worse than If you're a minimum or low wage earner, it's ruinous. If you're a median wage earner, it's very painful. If you're affluent, it still sucks. If they actually want to help the working class, this administration needs to tear up their energy policies, get the hell out of the way and let oil producers begin the long slog of increasing production.
In a couple of years' time - the amount of time it would take to undo these disastrous policies - we can be better off again. As long as they stay in the way, those working people for whom they claim their coal-black hearts bleed will keep being destroyed.
This requires the use of a metropolitan area. Of these, the New York data is the least precise because it includes parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, which both have higher gas taxes than New York. Posted by: Joe Mannix Not a cop! As always, pants are required, especially if you are wearing these pants So relax, find yourself a warm kitty or warm puppy--I won't judge to curl up in your lap, sprinkle some cinnamon and sugar on your buttered toast, and crack open a new book.
What are YOU reading this fine morning? More importantly, for all you fathers out there, what are you reading to your children? I used to live there when I was a kid. I have many fond memories of my parents taking me to the library. There were no drag queen story hours in those days.
It was a far more innocent time. The library has been renovated and updated over the years, so I'm sure it looks completely different on the inside than I remember. It's located in the "old town" section of Fort Collins, so there are numerous historical buildings located nearby, including a few old cabins from frontier times. It's a shame, too, because I probably would have enjoyed them when I was younger. They are basically a solo role-playing game module in paperback form. Ah, what we had to do to keep ourselves entertained before computer role-playing games really took off!
Tolkien seems to have been a pretty cool dad. Many kids write to Santa Claus or "Father Christmas" every year asking for presents. How many kids receive handwritten letters from Father Christmas? With illustrations? Tolkien built a whole world up there at the North Pole with interesting characters like Polar Bear, who is well-meaning but constantly getting into trouble.
He also describes an ongoing war between the Elves who just want to make toys and Goblins that want to steal them. The story's about a private eye--a fixer--hired by a famous television comedian to seek out a mysterious stranger with whom the zany, madcap TV star has made a shady deal. I spent weeks prior to writing the piece reading the likes of Chandler, Hammett, and Spillane to pick up the rhythms of the hard-boiled style, and think it's paid off.
I also have a Halloween-themed horror story, "Pick Trick," coming out later this summer in Cirsova magazine. Cirsova has also just bought yet another story, "Starring Hedy Lemarr", which relates how Stanley Kubrick, Andy Warhol, and Hedy Lemarr save the world from a murderous, mind-controlling alien invader. What can I say? My head goes to some strange places. I'm on a roll and couldn't be happier. Thanks, Troy. Stories about meetings with the Devil have a very long history.

Schantz aetherczar. Herbert was a huge critic of government and government over reach. Wonder what he would say today if he were still alive.
By all accounts, they are of somewhat mixed quality. Though from what I hear, the last three Dune books written by Frank Herbert are also not quite as good as his original trilogy. Herbert was a fairly prolific author, writing both numerous novels and plenty of short stories.
The first part of the book is the best, and I really enjoyed the pace at which it moves and the conversational writing style. It's like you're sitting there having a chat with the guy. He's telling the story as it unfolds, but digresses to explain this thing or that thing and then moves on. After he is captured by the Communists, the style of writing shifts as the heavy hand of censorship and propaganda takes over.
The last third in particular was a dull slog as Pu Yi explains how he learned everything he did was terrible and Communism made him a New Man who was better in every way. There's also a bunch of stories about how he's seeing nothing but healthy, happy children, everyone has plenty to eat, industry is thriving, etc.
Note that the years he's describing were those of the Great Leap Forward and incredible suffering in China. Particularly amusing were the accounts of the freed Japanese prisoners who finally got to go home in the s only to write back about how the evil Americans are driving their tanks all over Japan, ruining it.
Their sons are gangsters and their daughters are whores to the US G. By the way, there is no small amount of tension between Pu Yi talking about tradition and then whipsawing about how bad it was. Obviously this is still a problem in China today. All in all, I highly recommend it. The shortcomings of the conclusion don't take away from the fascinating portrait of life in the Forbidden City. Pu Yi himself is a tragic figure, even pathetic.
He's proud, arrogant, cruel and cowardly - in large part because that was how he was raised. The window into Imperial government is fascinating. I picked up my copy used, but if you can track one down and are interested in the topic, get it.
